Even though everyone was joking and laughing, Fiona could feel the underlying tension in Eli. Ever since Dylan had shown up, Eli had been on edge. When she’d asked him about it last night after they returned to their hotel room, Eli had brushed it off, saying that now was not the time to get into that story.

That tiny voice in the back of her mind had spoken up, telling her to be careful. If Eli didn’t have a problem keeping secrets from his best friend, then what made her think he would be honest with her? She was setting herself up for disaster.

As if she’d summoned her with her insecure thoughts, Fiona’s phone began to ring with a call from her mother. Speaking of secrets, she still hadn’t told her mom she was married.

Excusing herself, Fiona went outside to take the call.

“Hey, mom.”

“Fiona, where are you?”

“I’m in some town in Indiana. Why?”

“Indiana? Why?”

Fiona sighed. “I came with Eli to one of his gaming conventions.”

Several seconds passed in silence while Fiona braced herself.

“I thought that was over,” her mother finally said. “Fiona, I thought I taught you better than this. What lies is that man feeding you to make you drop everything and follow him three states away?”

She wasn’t sure if it was the fact that there was so much distance between them or that she was so happy at the moment that made her brave enough to tell her mother the truth, but she took a deep breath and did it anyway.

“Eli and I are married, Mother, so I would appreciate it if you would show my husband some respect.”

Her mother gasped. “What? Fiona Renee, tell me you’re joking. Tell me you weren’t stupid enough to fall for some man’s manipulation.”

“I love him,” Fiona said. “And getting married was my idea. I wanted this and quite frankly, Mother, it’s my life, not yours so you’re just going to have to accept and respect my decisions.”

Fiona had no idea where this sudden burst of courage had come from and it was terrifying. She felt like her heart was going to burst out of her chest. All her life, it had been just her and her mother. Well, and Ren now.

“Are you listening to yourself right now?” her mother snapped. “He’s already turning you against me.”

Oh. My. God.

“Eli wouldn’t do that,” Fiona protested. “He doesn’t even know you, Mom.”

“I’m sure you’ve already made him hate me just like that friend of yours. I don’t know why you insist on making me look like the bad guy when it’s your father who did this. He’s the one who tricked me and then abandoned us, Fiona. Not me.”

Her voice was nearing hysteria level.

“Mom, I don’t do that. Honestly, Eli and I haven’t really talked about you much at all.”

Not yet anyway. She’d managed to avoid that conversation.

“Is that supposed to make me feel better?” her mother snapped. “That you’re keeping me locked away like some dirty dark secret?”

Closing her eyes, Fiona silently counted to three.
